DirectHaler™ Pulmonary is a very innovative and completely new device for dry powder intrapulmonary delivery.

Each pre-metered, pre-filled pulmonary dose has its own DirectHaler™ Pulmonary device. The device is primeless, hygienically disposable, and is made of only 0,6 grammes of Polypropylene. DirectHaler™ Pulmonary offers effective, accurate and repeatable dosing in an intuitively easy-to-use device format.

In addition, the device is the first advanced pulmonary delivery device enabling pharmaceutical companies to manage own device manufacture, filling and packing.

DirectHaler™ Pulmonary opens a new track of development in pulmonary delivery
Currently marketed pulmonary dry powder devices are based on the “multidose” concept. The engineering efforts in such devices are focused on the mechanisms for dose metering, dose loading and dose counting. In DirectHaler™ Pulmonary, each dose has its own device; leading to elimination of “traditional” DPI-device mechanisms:

Each dose in DirectHaler™ Pulmonary is pre-metered and pre-filled, so dose metering and loading in the device is eliminated. In addition, the patient also saves a number of operations, as the DirectHaler™ Pulmonary device has eliminated procedures for dose loading and device cleaning, as the device is a monodose disposable inhaler.

DirectHaler™ Pulmonary is designed with attention to the key functionality requirements in dry powder inhalation, and for achieving improved patient compliance. The key functions (as illustrated below) are defined from our R&D in inhalation technology.

The high degree of “function-integration” in only two device components (with a total weight of 0,6 grammes) has been achieved by years of meticulous attention to engineering details and overall device functionality. DirectHaler™ Pulmonary combines sophistication and manufacturing simplicity
Innovative device engineering has for the first time made inhalation device manufacture, assembly and filling a task of reduced complexity. We therefore enable our licensees to establish own manufacturing. Each device is made from only 0.6 grammes PolyPropylene – which in combination with high-speed manufacturing processes ensure a competitive unit cost.

DirectHaler™ Pulmonary is a new benchmark for ease of use
DirectHaler™ Pulmonary is intuitively easy-to-use, which will minimize the instruction task – and ease any checking of the patient inhalation technique. This is very important, especially in therapeutic applications where patients are not used to inhale the medications.

The instruction icons for DirectHaler™ Pulmonary can be printed on the alu-folio of the pharma-blister pack. In this way the instructions will follow the device until the “point-of-use” for the patient.

The powder dose in DirectHaler™ Pulmonary, is always visible and ready for inhalation, so a complete inhalation and delivery of dose can be done within 5 to 10 seconds. In addition, the transparency of DirectHaler™ Pulmonary allows the patient to have visual contact with the dose – ensuring "dose ready" before inhalation and "dose taken" after the inhalation. The compact device dimensions ensure portability and discretion in using the device.
